Snow and icy roads cause issues for Jacksonville drivers

JACKSONVILLE, Ark.- For some Arkansans they got the snowy winter they’ve been looking forward to but for those taking to the road it’s a whole different icy story, as many residential areas are still coated with snow and ice.

After a winter storm blew through Arkansas, many neighborhoods like some in Jacksonville still have ice covered roads making some drivers think twice about getting out.

“It’s slicker on the curves and where the trees are over the roads and it’s still iced over so it’s a little thick,” Shanwna Penks said.

As for Meredith Roberts, she said her neighborhood has several dangerous spots like hills and certain curves.

“We got hung up coming out of some streets. Our tires were just kind of spinning for a minute until it got good enough traction,” said Roberts.

Patricia Sheppard was driving up a hill in Jacksonville when she experienced getting stuck.

“I was terrified of what could happen,” Sheppard said. “I guess I didn’t have enough traction or speed because I started to slide all the way down.”

Sheppard said at that moment she wasn’t sure what would happen.

“I was petrified. I wasn’t sure if I was going to go into this big valley and hit trees,” Sheppard said.

She adds that if it wasn’t for the people who helped her make it to the top, she is not sure that she would have.

“I don’t even like to drive when it’s good weather, so I really didn’t like to drive today.” Sheppard said. “ I was just out trying to see if I could make my way to work tomorrow and I’m glad I did come out today because I won’t be at work tomorrow.”

Patricia asked the FOX 16 crew to trail her home because she didn’t feel safe driving alone, when she did make it home, she said she felt a big sigh of relief.

“I know I won’t be going out again until the snow melts it,” Sheppard said.

In a statement from the Jacksonville Mayor about the residential road conditions he said,

“The city is working towards clearing a majority of the roads in town, primarily the main and high-traffic areas around town. Due to the timing and resources, the city may not be able to treat all residential roads and areas, but the Street Department is working to treat the collectors and arterials around Jacksonville.”

Collectors mean the major and minor roads that connect to local streets.
