UAMS announced it has been awarded more than $1.8 million to continue its doctoral student development program through 2028.
The Initiative for Maximizing Student Development was created in 2009 through a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The program’s goal is to increase the number of doctoral graduates from underrepresented groups through a wide-ranging mentoring and training program, UAMS said in a news release.
The four-week transition program consists of lectures on various biomedical topics, career and developmental seminars, and a summer research rotation prior to students’ first year of coursework. Students also receive information on different careers that may be available to them after graduation.
To be eligible for the program, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be accepted into the UAMS Graduate School’s Biomedical Informatics, Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Sciences Ph.D. programs.
Dr. Billy Thomas, the program’s co-principal investigator and neonatologist in the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, said program enrollment has tripled since it began. “It’s been productive for UAMS and the state of Arkansas as a whole.”
