Lyon Moves Forward (Editorial)

Lyon College’s announcement last week that it had determined locations for its dental and veterinary schools was good news, particularly in light of previous uncertainty.

The Batesville college said its veterinary school will be in Cabot and its dental school in the Riverdale area of Little Rock. Construction on the campuses will start this year, Lyon said, with the School of Dental Medicine planning to enroll its first students in the summer of 2025, and the School of Veterinary Medicine looking at enrolling its first class in the fall of 2025.

Lyon had previously proposed locating its Institute of Health Sciences, the umbrella organization of the two schools, on the campus of Heifer International in downtown Little Rock. And though we confess to being somewhat disappointed that the schools won’t be serving as a catalyst for continued development downtown, what’s most important is that they appear to be moving toward opening. Arkansas — and the nation — needs the dentists and veterinarians the schools will train.

The state will also benefit from the economic development that’s likely to accompany the opening of the schools, which will attract students and their instructors.

We look forward to Lyon’s continued progress on this front.
