CABOT, Ark. – Lifeguards at Cabot Aquatic Center were recognized by the Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services for saving the life of a toddler.
On Memorial Day, a three-year-old boy was found unconscious in one of the pools at the water park. Within seconds, lifeguards were performing CPR to save this child’s life.
Aquatic Director Jay Means was putting more chemicals into the pool when he heard the three whistles, signifying immediate help was needed.
“So my first thing to do was yell for someone to call 911,” Means said. “And the next thing to do is find out where you can help.”
Cabot Parks Assistant Director Kelly Lewis was on lifeguard duty on that day.
“So I entered the cold tub, rescued him and laid him across the edge of it, noticed that he was not breathing, didn’t have a pulse, so I started CPR,” Lewis said.
With the help of four other lifeguards using ventilators and the AED, they were able to save the boy’s life. He was later transported to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
On Thursday, the lifeguards were recognized by those medics for their quick response and for saving the child’s life.
“We’re very thankful that we got to witness a miracle that day,” Lewis said.
