MALVERN, Ark. – A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for setting a trap that resulted in a dog losing her leg earlier this month.

Glen Pye with the Hot Spring County Sheriff’s office got a call from a woman in Malvern on Feb. 2.

“She noticed she had a huge leg hold trap on its back right foot,” Pye said.

He said the woman had been feeding the dog for the past two years when she noticed the trap.

“Her leg was twisted and mangled and bloody. And the bone was shattered,” Pye said.

For 11 days, Pye and volunteers tried to catch the dog.

“She wouldn’t let us get close to her. She would lay down, so we only saw her from a distance,” Pye said. “I thought she had maybe died. I had kind of given up — we’re never going to catch her.”

Then he said she had been so worn down they were able to get close enough to make the rescue.

“We get the trap off, we take her to Your Pets Animal Hospital in Hot Springs — where the leg had to be amputated,” Pye said.

Now the sheriff’s office is partnering with the Animal Legal Defense Fund to offer a reward for information leading to an arrest for the person responsible for setting the trap.

“It’s a legal trap, but it’s not tagged,” Pye said. “All traps have to be tagged with the owner’s name and this one’s not.”
